“Can you hear me now? How about now? Oh, I was on mute… again.”

The benefits of online therapy are substantial.

While I truly value the face-to-face interactions I had with clients before, the shift to online therapy since Covid has opened up new opportunities. Online therapy allows clients to engage in sessions from the comfort of their own homes, which can be less intimidating and more convenient, especially when sharing personal information.

One of the main advantages is the ability to attend sessions from anywhere, as long as it’s a private space. It’s crucial to choose a confidential environment—avoiding places like supermarkets where privacy can be compromised. Online therapy also saves time and money by eliminating travel, which can often be more time-consuming than the session itself.

Additionally, online therapy is adaptable to your schedule. You can fit sessions around your daily routine, whether that’s after work or during a break. This flexibility has allowed me to successfully conduct therapy with clients online, and it has proven to be a transformative experience for both me and my clients. Although I miss the face-to-face connection and acknowledge that online therapy has its limitations, but the ability to reach and support more people through this medium is invaluable.

Drawbacks of Online Therapy

1. Tech Troubles: Sometimes, the internet or tech can play tricks on us, causing unexpected hiccups during sessions.

2. Missing the Cues: We might miss out on those subtle facial expressions or body language that help us read the room. It’s like trying to solve a mystery with only half the clues! * But hopefully, we can build trust and help you feel more at ease with online therapy, such issues won’t be a problem.

3. Privacy: Finding a totally secure and private spot can be tricky, especially if you're in a shared space or using an unreliable Wi-Fi network.

4. Digital Dilemmas: Not everyone is a tech wizard, so navigating online platforms might feel like a bit of a challenge for some.

Despite the drawbacks, online therapy remains a valuable option for many, providing flexibility, accessibility, and convenience that can outweigh the limitations.

Here the benefits broken down more clearly

1. Convenience: You can attend sessions with me from anywhere with an internet connection, eliminating the need for travel and allowing you to fit therapy into your schedule more easily (make sure it’s a confidential space).

2. Comfort: Engaging in therapy from the comfort of your own home can make the experience less intimidating and more relaxing.

3. Privacy ( haven't I mentioned this already!): Online therapy offers the advantage of privacy, as you can choose a confidential space to have your sessions, minimising the risk of being overheard or interrupted.

4. Flexibility: You can often schedule sessions at times that best suit your availability, making it easier to integrate therapy into a busy lifestyle.

5. Accessibility: Online CBT can reach individuals who may have difficulty accessing traditional face-to-face therapy due to geographic, mobility, or time constraints.

6. Cost-Effectiveness: Online therapy can be more affordable, as it eliminates commuting costs and may offer more competitive pricing.

7. Reduced Stigma: Online therapy can reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental health support, as it allows you to engage in therapy discreetly.

8. Continuity: In cases of travel or relocation, online therapy helps maintain continuity in treatment without disruption.

Overall, online CBT provides a flexible, accessible, and convenient way to receive effective therapy while overcoming many traditional barriers.

I’m enthusiastic about conducting therapy online and truly enjoy offering CBT this way. It’s fulfilling to help clients in this format.
